Orlando Ribeiro’s travels

This page presents a selection of images exemplifying some of the Orlando Ribeiro’s travels carried out between 1947 and 1961. The photographs were selected from the exhibition Além-Mar. Viagens de Orlando Ribeiro, presented at Univerity of Minho, Guimarães, in November 2002, and organised by Mário Neves, responsible for the Photographic Archive of the Centro de Estudos Geográficos de Lisboa.

Most of the scientific work of Orlando Ribeiro is closely related to his numerous travels either in Portugal and Spain, during the 40s mostly, or to many other regions of the World, especially from 1950 to 1965. The most important and more immediate records of the travels are his field note-books, where the geographer recorded his observations, and the abundant photographs in which he captured landscapes, people and natural phenomena.
